A Children's Story
Once there was a dog named Fen. Everyone loved Fen. "What a good boy! You're such a pretty boy!" They'd chant while petting him with grand excitement. And Fen was indeed a good boy--loyal, and always there when you needed him. Fen protected and looked out for everyone. If someone needed something, whatever it was, Fen would fetch it.
After awhile everyone got used to Fen helping them out. No one thanked Fen anymore, they just expected it. It even went as far that they'd complain when Fen didn't come to them right away.
When Fen was down, no one picked him up."What's wrong, boy, what's with the long sigh?" They would ask him, trying to get him to play instead. So, knowing it was no good to be sad, and since he could not express his feelings the way humans can, Fen just wagged his tail and smiled. After-all, Fen didn't want to bring anyone down.
But, as time went on, Fen started to feel used. He loved to help, but there was only so much of himself that he could give. Fen felt that only loved him because they needed him. So, Fen ran away for a week, and when he came back he was met with the worried faces of all those whom he left behind. They rejoiced at his return, "we missed you so much, Fen! We were so worried! It's so great to have you home!"
Fen
always wondered what happened after he left, but whatever it was, it
must have taught them to appreciate him more, for after that they made
a greater effort to show him that they cared.Fen never felt like
leaving again, and because of simple signs of gratitude, Fen was happy
once again.
Moral of the story:
Always thank those that do things for you, especially those that take
care of you, and be sure to never take them for granted, for you never
know when they will be gone.
